Transalpina, the King’s Road

When it comes to holidays, many of us dream of exotic destinations, forgetting how beautiful our own country is. So, taking advantage of a few days off, I decided to take a short trip to Transalpina, the highest road in Romania and one of the most spectacular in Europe.

Starting from Alba Iulia, I set off on the journey with excitement and anticipation, ready to explore this natural wonder. The route to reach Transalpina from Alba Iulia is quite simple. I followed DN7 towards Sebeș, then took DN67C heading south, which is the road that crosses the Parâng Mountains and represents Transalpina itself. The journey to Transalpina took approximately 3 and a half hours, covering around 160 kilometers.

Transalpina, also known as the “King’s Road”, is located in the Parâng Mountains and stretches for approximately 148 kilometers, between the towns of Novaci (Gorj County) and Sebeș (Alba County). The road crosses four counties (Gorj, Vâlcea, Sibiu, and Alba) and reaches a maximum altitude of 2,145 meters at Urdele Pass, making it the highest road in Romania.

The breathtaking landscapes of Transalpina literally took my breath away. The Parâng Mountains, with their high and rugged peaks, unfold in a spectacular panorama, offering truly unforgettable views. While driving along this road, I had the opportunity to admire nature in all its splendor, with vast forests and alpine meadows. I made several stops to capture these moments and to enjoy the fresh, cool mountain air.

My experience on Transalpina was truly magical. The road itself is well maintained and offers excellent driving conditions, while the winding curves and sharp turns add an extra dose of excitement and adventure.

After a day full of adventure and discoveries, I decided to stay overnight at Hotel Onix. The hotel was pleasant and provided everything I needed for a comfortable stay. I even had dinner at the hotel restaurant, where I enjoyed traditional Romanian dishes. The atmosphere was authentic and welcoming, and the food was delicious and satisfying.

The next day, after breakfast, I headed back towards Alba Iulia with my heart full of beautiful memories and a strong desire to return to this wonderful area of the country. The return journey was just as enjoyable, and the landscapes continued to fascinate me, even after spending an entire day surrounded by them.

My journey on Transalpina was a memorable experience that allowed me to explore one of the most spectacular areas of Romania. The stunning landscapes, fresh air, and hospitality of the locals made me fall in love with this place and wish to return as soon as possible. If you ever have the chance to visit Transalpina, don’t hesitate—you will certainly have an unforgettable experience.
