Constantin Brâncuși was born in 1876 in the village of Hobița, near Târgu Jiu, and spent much of his childhood in this area. The inspiration for many of his monumental works came from the landscapes and traditions of Gorj. At the age of 19, he moved to Bucharest to study at the School of Fine Arts, and later to Paris, where he became one of the most important representatives of modern art.

Despite his international success, Brâncuși never forgot his connection to Târgu Jiu and the Gorj region. He often returned to the city and donated some of his works to be displayed in the Brâncuși Museum in Târgu Jiu. Among these are The Endless Column, The Table of Silence, and The Gate of the Kiss.

The Endless Column, one of Brâncuși’s most impressive works, symbolizes the connection between heaven and earth. It is one of his most well-known and appreciated creations, located in the central area of Târgu Jiu.

The Table of Silence is another important work by Brâncuși, symbolizing silence and mystery. Another interpretation suggests that the Table of Silence, carved from Banpotoc stone, represents the Last Supper, with the 12 apostles surrounding Jesus. The 12 seats around the table represent the apostles, while the table itself symbolizes Jesus.

The Gate of the Kiss is located along the alley at the entrance of the city park. It is a trilith carved from porous stone extracted from nearby quarries. It consists of two thick, parallelepiped-shaped columns supporting an architrave larger than the columns themselves, measuring 6.45 meters in width, 5.13 meters in height, and 1.69 meters in thickness.

Constantin Brâncuși was one of the most important modern sculptors of the 20th century, with a major contribution to the evolution of modern sculpture. He created unique and revolutionary works that influenced generations of artists and became reference points for contemporary art. He was a free and independent spirit who followed his own path, creating works that transcended borders and became universal. Brâncuși remains one of the most admired and respected artists in Romania and worldwide, and his work continues to inspire and fascinate both artists and audiences today.

Târgu Jiu is a city rich in history and culture, offering visitors a unique experience through its sculptural monuments and cultural heritage.
