First day
The first stop was Rupea Fortress, a medieval fortification located on a hill in Brașov County. The fortress was built in the 14th century and played an important role in defending Transylvania. I was fascinated by its unique architecture and the way it was constructed on three levels, each with its own defensive wall.
The next destination was Prejmer Fortress, one of the best-preserved fortified churches in Transylvania. Located near Brașov, the fortress was built in the 13th century and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. I was impressed by the thickness of its walls and the small rooms where people lived during sieges.
Before ending the first day, I visited the Fortified Church of Hărman, another impressive example of medieval architecture. Built in the 13th century, the church features a tall tower and thick walls that protected the community during invasions. I admired its frescoes and Gothic elements.
In the evening, I arrived in Brașov, a city full of history and remarkable architecture. I stayed at Warthe Guesthouse, a comfortable accommodation located in the old town. For dinner, I chose the restaurant “La Ceaun”, where I enjoyed traditional Romanian dishes such as stuffed cabbage rolls and polenta.
Second day
On the second day, I headed towards Făgăraș Fortress, an imposing fortification located in Brașov County. Also known as Făgăraș Castle, the fortress was built in the 14th century and served as a noble residence, prison, and military garrison. I visited the museum inside the fortress and admired its collection of historical and artistic objects.
The final stop was Biertan Fortified Church, a UNESCO-listed site located in a Saxon village in Sibiu County. Built in Gothic style in the 15th century, the fortress is known for its ingenious locking system on the gate and for the church organ dating back to 1869. I explored the rooms of the fortress and was impressed by the architectural details and the atmosphere rich in history.
After visiting Biertan Fortified Church, I returned to Sibiu, thus concluding a weekend full of discoveries. This route showed me how rich and diverse Romania’s culture and history are and motivated me to discover more of this country’s treasures in the future.
