Deva is an important historical, cultural, and economic center, being one of the oldest cities in Romania. The main tourist attraction that draws visitors to the city is Deva Fortress.

Deva Fortress is a historical monument and a secular architectural structure, one of the most important tourist attractions in Romania and a symbol of the city of Deva, located in the central part of Hunedoara County. It was built in the mid-13th century on Fortress Hill, a volcanic cone with an altitude of 378 meters, and became one of the most important defensive centers in the region.

In this area, traces of habitation from the Neolithic and Bronze Age have been discovered. Due to the finding of carved stone blocks with dovetail-shaped cuts, archaeologists concluded that these are remnants of a Dacian fortification.

Today, the fortress is a popular tourist destination, offering visitors a journey through history and culture. It is located approximately 1 km from the city center and can be reached either on foot or by cable car. Additionally, on Gymnasts’ Alley, located nearby, tourists can see busts of famous gymnasts and their coaches.

While exploring the fortress, you can admire medieval architecture and learn about the region’s turbulent history. You will also enjoy a panoramic view of the entire city, which is truly spectacular.

At the base of the hill where the fortress stands, visitors can find other important attractions, such as Bethlen Castle and the Museum of Dacian and Roman Civilization, which houses an impressive collection of ancient artifacts. The museum offers a fascinating insight into the region’s history, from the Dacian-Roman period to the present day.

The area around the fortress is perfect for a relaxing walk, thanks to the park with a children’s playground and pathways for strolling. Here, visitors can enjoy the beauty of the surrounding nature and the tranquility of this peaceful place.

Through its combination of medieval architecture, spectacular panoramic views, and nearby attractions, the fortress offers an experience that tourists should not miss.
